What Is a Threadlocker?
A threadlocker is a liquid adhesive applied to threaded fasteners. After assembly, it cures inside the threads to lock against vibration, seal micro-gaps to reduce leakage, and help protect the joint from corrosion. This reduces loosening, rework, and unplanned downtime in maintenance and production.
Vibration
Helps prevent fasteners from backing out under vibration, shock, and thermal cycling—common in motors, pumps, and gearboxes.
Leakage
Fills thread gaps to improve sealing performance, helping reduce fluid or gas leakage paths in threaded joints.
Corrosion
Helps block moisture and contaminants from the thread interface, reducing corrosion risk and easing future service.
How Threadlockers Work
Threadlockers cure after assembly to create a solid polymer inside the threads, helping lock the fastener, seal micro-gaps, and reduce loosening under vibration.
-->
Suggested scene: liquid on bolt threads → assembly squeeze-out → oxygen excluded → cured layer fills gaps.
Curing process (4 steps)
-
1Apply liquid to threads
Dispense a small bead onto the male threads (and/or inside the nut for larger sizes).
-
2Assemble & distribute
As the fastener is tightened, the liquid spreads across engaged threads and gaps.
-
3Oxygen is excluded
Inside the joint, air is blocked; the adhesive is confined between metal surfaces.
-
4Cures & fills gaps
The adhesive polymerizes into a solid layer that helps lock, seal, and resist loosening.

How to Apply
Follow these steps for reliable locking and sealing. The tips on the right address common field issues that cause “threadlocker didn’t hold” complaints.
Application steps
-
1Prep the fastener
Remove loose dirt and obvious oil. Dry the parts before applying.
-
2Apply the threadlocker
Use a small bead on the male threads where the nut/bolt will engage.
-
3Assemble to spec
Tighten to the required torque. The liquid will spread through the engaged threads.
-
4Allow fixture time
Let the joint reach handling strength before putting it into service.
-
5Wait for full cure
Full performance requires additional cure time, especially on less reactive metals or larger gaps.

LOCTITE Threadlockers are trusted worldwide to secure threaded fasteners against vibration, shock, and environmental stress.
They cure anaerobically to form a solid thermoset plastic between metal threads—eliminating loosening, sealing against corrosion, and ensuring long-term reliability in any industrial environment.
What Is a Threadlocker?
A threadlocker is a specialized anaerobic adhesive designed to lock and seal threaded fasteners.
When confined between metal surfaces and deprived of air, it cures to form a durable polymer that bonds the threads together, preventing loosening and leakage caused by vibration, impact, or thermal expansion.
Unlike mechanical locking devices such as lock washers or split pins, LOCTITE threadlockers create a 100% contact bond that resists even the most demanding conditions.
How Threadlockers Work?
LOCTITE Threadlockers fill the microscopic gaps between threads.
Once assembled, the absence of oxygen and the presence of active metal ions trigger the adhesive to cure.
The result: a tough, thermoset polymer that holds fasteners in place and protects against vibration, shock, and corrosion.
Curing process:
Liquid threadlocker is applied to the threads.
The fastener is assembled and tightened.
Air is excluded, curing begins.
A strong, durable bond forms—locking and sealing the joint.
Common Applications
LOCTITE Threadlockers are used across industries where safety, precision, and reliability matter most:
Automotive: engine bolts, transmission assemblies, brake components
Industrial equipment: pumps, compressors, gearboxes, motors
Aerospace and defense: critical vibration-resistant fasteners
