LOCTITE SF 7649 is a one‑component, solvent‑based primer designed to enhance the cure rate and bonding performance of anaerobic adhesives and sealants (i.e., adhesives that cure in absence of air) on challenging surfaces. It is especially useful when bonding passive or inactive metals (such as stainless steel, anodised aluminium or plated surfaces), when there are large gap dimensions, or when assembly temperatures are below ~15 °C (60 °F).
By preparing the substrate with this activator, you improve adhesive cure reliability, reduce fixture time, and promote full strength even under less‑than‑ideal conditions.
Основные характеристики и преимущества
-
Promotes faster cure of anaerobic adhesives and sealants on inactive or passive metal surfaces (which otherwise may not cure fully).
-
Supports reliable bonding in cold environments (below ~15 °C) or where large bond gaps exist.
-
Low‑viscosity solvent formula that penetrates into thread roots or fine gaps, leaving a thin active layer on the metal surface.
-
Compatible with a wide range of anaerobic products from the same brand, facilitating use in standard fastening, retaining, threadlocking or gasketing applications.
-
Colour‑coded (green liquid) for easy identification as primer/activator.
Приложения
-
Подготовка поверхности: Clean the substrates thoroughly. Remove oils, greases, coatings, or contaminants. A suitable cleaner (e.g., LOCTITE® SF 7070) may be used.
-
Primer Application: Apply LOCTITE SF 7649 either by brush or spray to one or both mating surfaces. For many small gaps, applying to one surface is sufficient; for porous or inactive surfaces, apply to both.
-
Drying Time: Allow the solvent carrier to evaporate until the surface is dry to the touch (typically 30‑70 seconds under standard conditions).
-
Assembly & Adhesive Application: Apply your specified anaerobic adhesive to the treated surfaces and assemble immediately, following the adhesive’s guidelines.
-
Curing & Fixture: The activator prepares the surface; the adhesive cures as per its own conditions. Ensure recommended cure time and clamping are respected.
-
Shelf & Handling Considerations:
-
The primed surfaces should be bonded within the “on‑part life” (typically up to 30 days) unless contamination occurs.
-
Handle the activator in a well‑ventilated area; solvent vapours are flammable.
-
Советы:
-
Use minimal primer to avoid excess residue which may interfere with adhesive function.
-
For assemblies in low‑temperature production (<15 °C), this primer can significantly accelerate cure and reduce fixture time.
-
After priming, avoid re‑contamination of surfaces before application of adhesive.
Часто задаваемые вопросы
Q1: Do I always need to use SF 7649 primer when using anaerobic adhesives?
A1: Not necessarily. If you are bonding active metals (e.g., bare steel, copper, bronze) under standard temperature and gap conditions, many anaerobic adhesives will cure without primer. The primer is recommended for inactive/passive metals, large gaps or low temperatures.
Q2: How long after applying the primer do I need to apply the adhesive?
A2: After the primer solvent evaporates, the treated surface remains ready (“on‑part life”) for up to approximately 30 days if kept free from contamination. It’s best to apply adhesive as soon as possible.
Q3: Is the primer compatible with all anaerobic adhesives?
A3: Yes — it is designed to promote cure of LOCTITE® brand anaerobic adhesives/sealants. However, always verify compatibility with the adhesive’s TDS.
Q4: What precaution should I take for safety?
A4: The product is highly flammable (solvent‑based). Use in a well‑ventilated area, avoid ignition sources and consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full hazard information.
Q5: Will using the primer always reduce fixture time?
A5: Yes for the right conditions — especially when bonding passive metals, or when assembly temperature is low or gaps are large. The primer activates the surface for faster cure of the anaerobic adhesive.
