Product Overview

LOCTITE SF 770 Primer is a one-component adhesion promoter formulated to enable reliable bonding of difficult-to-adhere plastics—such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and thermoplastic rubbers—with LOCTITE instant (cyanoacrylate) adhesives.  It features an ultra-low viscosity solvent base and is designed for application prior to adhesive use; once applied and dried, the treated surface becomes receptive to the adhesive and helps achieve performance close to what is expected on standard substrates.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Prepares low-energy plastic surfaces (e.g., PE, PP, PTFE) for bonding when standard adhesives struggle.

  • Very low viscosity and solvent-based, allowing deep wetting of fine surface features before adhesive application.

  • Visible fluorescence under UV light for easy inspection of primer coverage and quality-control.

  • Simple one-step application (brush, spray or dip) prior to adhesive—reduces complexity vs multi-part surface treatments.

  • Helps achieve adhesive performance on challenging substrates without resorting to special adhesives or complicated pre-treatments.

Applications

  1. Surface Preparation – Ensure the bonding surfaces are clean, dry and free from oil, release agents, dust or wax. Use appropriate cleaners if necessary.

  2. Primer Application – Apply LOCTITE SF 770 in a thin, uniform layer to the area of the low-energy substrate that will be bonded. Methods include brushing, spraying or dipping depending on the part size and geometry.

  3. Drying / Evaporation – Allow the applied primer to evaporate until the solvent has dried and the surface is ready for adhesive. Ensure no re-contamination occurs before adhesive application.

  4. Adhesive Application & Bonding – Immediately or within the recommended on-part life apply the compatible LOCTITE instant adhesive to the mating surface(s). Assemble parts per adhesive instructions.

  5. Cure & Handling – Follow the adhesive’s cure schedule. The primer does not replace the adhesive’s cure requirements—it only conditions the substrate for optimal bonding.

  6. Maintenance / Storage – Store the primer in its sealed container under recommended conditions. Ensure good ventilation during use (due to solvents) and follow all safety instructions in the SDS.

Tips:

  • Do not over-apply primer – excessive residue may interfere with adhesive bonding.

  • For best results, apply adhesive soon after primer drying to avoid surface contamination.

  • Use UV-checking (if available) to confirm primer-coating coverage–fluorescent trace helps quality checks.

  • For large or complex parts, consider masking non-bonding areas to avoid unnecessary primer spread.

FAQs

Q1: Can LOCTITE SF 770 be used with any adhesive?
A1: It is specifically designed for use with LOCTITE instant (cyanoacrylate) adhesives; while it may help other adhesive types, you should always verify compatibility with your chosen adhesive and conduct tests.
Q2: Which substrates require this primer?
A2: It is recommended for low-surface-energy plastics such as PE, PP, PTFE and some elastomers where bonding is typically difficult.
Q3: Does the primer itself provide bonding strength?
A3: No — the primer conditions the surface for adhesive bonding; the adhesive still supplies the bond strength.
Q4: How long can the primed part wait before adhesive application?
A4: The “on-part life” depends on ambient conditions and contamination risk – refer to the TDS for guidance. Surface contamination will degrade effectiveness.
Q5: Does the primer improve peel strength of the bonded joint?
A5: The primer improves adhesion on substrates where standard bonding fails; however, it is not recommended for applications requiring very high peel strength on these low-energy plastics unless the adhesive system is tested for that requirement.
