Overview

Loctite EA M-31CL is a two-part, clear epoxy adhesive designed for high-performance bonding of plastics, metals and glass, especially in medical devices and optically clear assemblies. After mixing, it cures at room temperature to form a rigid, transparent bond line with excellent adhesion and chemical resistance.

Typical positioning:

  • Technology: 2-part epoxy structural adhesive

  • Appearance (mixed): Clear to slightly amber

  • Mix ratio: 2:1 by volume (resin : hardener)

  • Viscosity: Low to medium – suitable for flowing into tight gaps and small cavities

  • Cure: Room-temperature cure; heat can be used to accelerate

  • Use: Adhesive for medical device assembly and demanding multi-substrate bonding

It is commonly specified where you need clarity, strong bonds and reliable performance under sterilization and cleaning regimes (subject to validation in the final device).

Key Features & Benefits

  • Clear, cosmetic bond line

    • Cures to a transparent joint, ideal for sight windows, housings, sensors and optical components where appearance and visibility are important.

  • Medical-grade formulation

    • Part of Henkel’s medical epoxy range, suitable for disposable and diagnostic device assembly when properly qualified in the end-use design.

  • High bond strength on many substrates

    • Provides strong lap shear and tensile strength on metals, glass and engineering plastics, supporting structural or semi-structural joints in compact devices.

  • Low-viscosity wet-out

    • Flows into narrow bond gaps, capillaries and small cavities, making it well suited for small components, sensors and potting of delicate parts.

  • Room-temperature cure

    • No oven required: cures after mixing at ambient temperature, simplifying assembly of heat-sensitive plastics and electronic components.

  • Chemical and solvent resistance

    • Once fully cured, offers good resistance to many cleaning agents and process fluids, helping maintain bond integrity over the life of the device.

  • Electrical insulation

    • The cured epoxy is an electrical insulator, useful around PCBs, connectors and sensing electronics.

Typical Applications

Loctite EA M-31CL is widely used in:

  • Medical devices & diagnostics

    • Bonding clear housings, fluid paths and covers

    • Joining plastic to plastic, plastic to metal, or glass to plastic in diagnostic cartridges, sensors and small devices

    • Encapsulating or staking small electronic components inside medical instruments

  • Optical and sensor assemblies

    • Bonding lenses, light guides, transparent windows and sensor caps where clarity and alignment must be maintained

    • Small potting tasks where operators need to see into the encapsulated area

  • Electronics & instrumentation

    • Bonding connectors, housings and structural inserts on or near PCBs

    • Providing insulating, protective bonds in compact instruments and controllers

  • General industrial bonding

    • Applications needing clear appearance plus strong adhesion, such as display windows, indicator lenses and protective covers.

How to Use Loctite EA M-31CL

Always follow the latest Henkel Technical Data Sheet and your internal validation procedures, especially for medical applications.

Step 1 – Surface preparation

  1. Ensure all bonding surfaces are clean, dry and free from oil, dust and release agents.

  2. Degrease metals and plastics with a suitable solvent (isopropanol, approved industrial cleaner, etc.).

  3. For maximum strength, lightly abrade metals or rigid plastics, then re-clean to remove particles.

Step 2 – Mixing

  1. Dispense resin and hardener at the correct mix ratio (2:1 by volume).

  2. Mix thoroughly until the blend is uniform in color and consistency, scraping the sides and bottom of the mixing cup.

  3. Observe the working time / pot life stated on the TDS; do not use adhesive once it starts to thicken or warm noticeably.

(If using a dual cartridge with static mixer, the system meters and mixes automatically—just discard the initial small amount until flow is uniform.)

Step 3 – Application & assembly

  1. Apply a thin, even bead or film of mixed adhesive to one of the mating surfaces.

  2. Bring the parts together, sliding slightly if needed to ensure full wet-out of the bond area.

  3. Use fixtures, clamps or jigs to hold the parts in the correct position and maintain a consistent, thin bond line during cure.

  4. Avoid creating large pools of adhesive, which can slow cure and generate excess shrinkage.

Step 4 – Cure

  1. Allow the assembly to cure at room temperature according to the TDS schedule (typically several hours to handling strength, full cure in roughly 24 hours depending on temperature and geometry).

  2. If permitted by your design, a moderate heat post-cure can shorten cure time and optimize final strength and chemical resistance.

  3. Do not subject the bond to full mechanical or thermal load until it has fully cured.

Safety & Handling

As with most epoxy systems, Loctite EA M-31CL contains epoxy resins and amine curing agents. Appropriate precautions are needed:

  • Avoid skin and eye contact; uncured components can cause irritation or sensitisation with repeated exposure.

  • Use in a well-ventilated area and avoid breathing vapors or aerosols, especially during mixing and curing.

  • Wear safety glasses or goggles, chemical-resistant gloves and suitable protective clothing.

  • Store components in their original, tightly closed containers at the temperature recommended by Henkel.

  • Prevent uncured material from entering drains or the environment; dispose of waste and empty containers according to local regulations.

Always consult the latest Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and Technical Data Sheet (TDS) before production use, especially when assembling regulated medical devices.

FAQs

Q1: What is Loctite EA M-31CL mainly used for?
Loctite EA M-31CL is mainly used for clear, high-strength bonding of plastics, metals and glass, especially in medical devices, diagnostics and optical/sensor assemblies where a transparent bond line and chemical resistance are important.

Q2: Is EA M-31CL suitable for medical applications?
Yes. It is part of Henkel’s medical epoxy range and is commonly used for disposable and diagnostic device assembly, but each device manufacturer must still validate biocompatibility and processing in the final design and regulatory context.

Q3: Does Loctite EA M-31CL require heat to cure?
No. It is formulated to cure at room temperature after mixing. However, applying moderate heat (within substrate limits) can accelerate cure and help achieve ultimate properties faster.

Q4: What materials does it bond best?
It bonds glass, many medical-grade plastics and metals very effectively, making it ideal for mixed-material assemblies such as plastic housings with metal inserts and clear windows bonded to metal frames.

Q5: Is the cured epoxy electrically insulating?
Yes. The cured Loctite EA M-31CL forms a rigid, electrically insulating bond line, so it can be used around PCB-mounted components, sensors and connectors where insulation is needed.

Q6: Can I disassemble parts bonded with EA M-31CL?
Like most structural epoxies, EA M-31CL forms a permanent bond. Disassembly typically requires heat plus mechanical methods (cutting, prying, machining) and may damage one or both components. Design joints assuming limited rework.

Q7: How clear is the cured adhesive?
When mixed and cured correctly in thin bond lines, EA M-31CL cures to a clear or slightly amber joint, usually suitable for visual inspection and optical paths. Excessive thickness or trapped air can reduce optical quality.

Q8: How long is the working time after mixing?
The working (open) time depends on ambient temperature and mix volume, but is generally on the order of tens of minutes. Always refer to the TDS for exact values and plan your assembly so you complete positioning before gel time.
