Key Features & Benefits
-
High peel and shear strength
Designed to give strong, durable joints that handle both lap shear loads and peel forces, ideal for stressed assemblies and dissimilar materials. -
Room-temperature cure
Cures after mixing without an oven, simplifying production of heat-sensitive parts and medical disposables. -
Broad substrate compatibility
Bonds glass, many plastics and metals with consistently high adhesion, which is very useful in mixed-material medical and device assemblies. -
Excellent chemical and solvent resistance
Once fully cured, the adhesive withstands a wide range of chemicals and solvents, supporting demanding cleaning and service conditions. -
Electrical insulation
Provides good dielectric properties, so it can be used around sensors, connectors and electronic components where insulation is important. -
ISO 10993 compliant
Qualified by Henkel as ISO 10993 compliant for use in the assembly of disposable medical devices, subject to proper evaluation in the final device.
Typical Applications
Loctite EA M-21HP is used in both medical and industrial environments, for example:
-
Medical device assembly
-
Bonding of disposable medical components such as housings, fittings and clear windows
-
Joining plastic to metal or glass in fluid-handling and monitoring devices
-
-
Electronics & instrumentation
-
Bonding sensors, connectors and small components where electrical insulation and chemical resistance are needed
-
-
General structural bonding
-
Joining metals, engineering plastics, glass and composites in small structural assemblies
-
Applications requiring high peel strength and impact resistance, such as fixtures, brackets and light mechanical parts
-
How to Use Loctite EA M-21HP
Always follow the latest Henkel Technical Data Sheet and your internal validation procedures, especially for medical devices.
Step 1 – Surface preparation
-
Remove oil, dust, oxides, mold release and paint from all bonding surfaces.
-
Clean with a suitable solvent and allow to dry completely.
-
For high-strength structural bonds, lightly abrade metals or rigid plastics, then re-clean.
Step 2 – Mixing
-
Dispense resin and hardener at the correct mix ratio (2:1 by volume).
-
Mix thoroughly until color and consistency are uniform, scraping the sides and bottom of the mixing container.
-
Observe the working time / pot life given in the TDS; do not use once the mixture begins to thicken significantly.
(When using dual cartridges and a static mixer, the system meters and mixes at the correct ratio automatically.)
Step 3 – Application & assembly
-
Apply a uniform bead or thin layer of mixed adhesive to one surface.
-
Bring the parts together, moving slightly if needed to ensure full wet-out of the bond area.
-
Clamp or fixture the assembly to maintain the desired bond-line thickness and alignment during cure.
Step 4 – Cure
-
Allow the adhesive to cure at room temperature according to the TDS schedule (handling strength after several hours; full cure typically within 24 hours, depending on temperature and bond geometry).
-
If allowed by the substrate and design, a moderate heat post-cure can shorten cure time and maximize final properties.
Safety & Handling
Loctite EA M-21HP is an epoxy system; the hardener is classified as corrosive and sensitising, so appropriate precautions are required.
-
Avoid skin and eye contact with resin and hardener; may cause burns or irritation and can lead to skin sensitisation.
-
Use in a well-ventilated area; avoid breathing vapors, especially during mixing and curing.
-
Wear safety glasses or goggles, chemical-resistant gloves and suitable protective clothing.
-
Keep away from heat and direct sunlight; store in original containers at the temperature recommended by Henkel.
-
Prevent uncured material from entering drains or natural waterways; dispose of waste and empty containers according to local regulations.
Always read the current Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and Technical Data Sheet (TDS) before production use, particularly for regulated medical applications.
FAQs
Q1: What is Loctite EA M-21HP mainly used for?
It is primarily used as a high-performance, 2-part medical epoxy for disposable medical device assembly and other structural bonding where high peel and shear strength, chemical resistance and electrical insulation are required.
Q2: Is Loctite EA M-21HP suitable for medical applications?
Yes. It is ISO 10993 compliant and described as suitable for disposable medical device assembly, but each device manufacturer must still perform its own biocompatibility and process validation.
Q3: What materials does it bond best?
Loctite EA M-21HP provides excellent adhesion to glass, a wide range of plastics and metals, making it ideal for mixed-material assemblies.
Q4: Does it require heat to cure?
No. It is formulated to cure at room temperature after mixing. Heat may be used to accelerate cure or to optimise properties, but it is not mandatory for polymerisation.
Q5: How chemically resistant is the cured adhesive?
Once fully cured, EA M-21HP is resistant to many common chemicals and solvents and maintains its strength in demanding environments, which is one reason it’s used in medical and industrial assemblies.
Q6: Is it electrically conductive?
No. The cured epoxy acts as an electrical insulator, making it suitable around electrical and electronic components where insulation is needed.
Q7: Can the bonded parts be disassembled?
EA M-21HP forms a permanent structural bond. Disassembly typically requires heat and mechanical force, and may damage one or both parts—so joints should be designed assuming limited rework.
Q8: What mix ratio should I use?
Follow the specified ratio: approximately 2:1 by volume (resin:hardener) or 100:55 by weight, and mix thoroughly until the blend is uniform before application.
