Overview

Loctite EA 9396 is a two-part, aerospace-grade structural epoxy adhesive designed for high-strength, durable bonding in demanding airframe, transportation and industrial assemblies. It offers a toughened bond line, good gap-filling capability and is suited to metal, composite and honeycomb bonding applications.

Once cured, Loctite EA 9396:

  • Provides high shear and peel strength on properly prepared substrates

  • Forms a tough, fatigue-resistant bond line that withstands vibration and impact

  • Fills gaps, surface irregularities and core cells in honeycomb structures

  • Offers good performance over a wide service temperature range

It is widely used where engineers need reliable, long-term structural bonds and proven aerospace-style performance.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Two-component structural epoxy
Resin and hardener react to form a rigid, high-strength adhesive suitable for primary and secondary structural joints (when properly qualified).

  • Toughened formulation
The cured adhesive is tough and damage-tolerant, helping joints resist impact, vibration and cyclic loading.

  • Gap-filling, paste consistency
Non-sag, thixotropic rheology stays where applied, fills small gaps and works well on vertical surfaces and in honeycomb cores.

  • Multi-substrate capability
Bonds aluminium, steel, titanium, composites and honeycomb (metal or composite), enabling mixed-material construction.

  • Controlled working time & cure
Provides usable open time for complex layups and panel assemblies; cures at ambient or elevated temperature depending on process and specification.

  • Improved load distribution
Spreads load across the bond area, helping reduce stress concentrations around fasteners, rivets and welds.

Always refer to OEM or customer specifications when using EA 9396 in certificated aerospace structures.

Typical Applications

Loctite EA 9396 is commonly used in:

  • Aerospace structures

    • Bonding metal or composite skins to honeycomb cores

    • Structural and semi-structural bonding of frames, ribs, stiffeners and doublers

    • Repairs to bonded assemblies when allowed by the repair scheme

  • Transportation & high-performance vehicles

    • Bonding composite body panels, structural inserts and reinforcements

    • Metal-to-composite joints requiring high stiffness and durability

  • Industrial and engineered structures

    • High-performance structural panels and sandwich constructions

    • Load-bearing assemblies where long-term reliability is essential

How to Use Loctite EA 9396

Step 1 – Surface preparation

  1. Ensure all bonding surfaces are clean, dry and structurally sound.

  2. Remove contamination, loose paint, oxidation and weak coatings.

  3. Follow the approved surface preparation process (often including cleaning, abrasion or grit blasting, and chemical treatment/primers in aerospace work).

  4. Handle prepared parts with clean gloves to avoid recontamination.

Step 2 – Mixing

  1. Bring both components to the recommended working temperature.

  2. Mix resin and hardener at the specified mix ratio (by weight or volume).

  3. Stir thoroughly, scraping sides and bottom of the container until the mixture is uniform in colour and texture.

  4. Avoid entrapping excessive air and respect the pot life; do not use material once it has begun to gel.

  5. For pre-packaged kits or cartridges, follow the specific mixing / kit-handling instructions.

Step 3 – Application

  1. Apply a uniform layer or bead of mixed EA 9396 to one or both substrates.

  2. For honeycomb structures, ensure complete wetting and filling of the core cells as specified.

  3. Maintain the designed bond line thickness using shims, spacers or core geometry.

Step 4 – Assembly & cure

  1. Bring the parts together within the adhesive’s working time.

  2. Apply consistent pressure or vacuum bagging (where specified) to ensure intimate contact and squeeze-out of excess adhesive.

  3. Cure under the approved time/temperature profile (ambient and/or elevated temperature) according to the relevant process specification or repair manual.

  4. Allow the joint to cool and rest as required before machining or applying full load.

Step 5 – Finishing & inspection

  1. Remove excess cured adhesive by trimming or machining as needed.

  2. Perform any required NDT or visual inspection of the bond line and panel.

  3. Complete subsequent finishing operations (e.g. sealing, painting) in accordance with the applicable specification.

Safety & Handling

  • Avoid skin and eye contact with uncured resin and hardener; epoxies and curing agents may cause irritation or sensitisation.

  • Use in a well-ventilated area and avoid breathing vapours or dust from machining cured material.

  • Wear appropriate PPE: chemical-resistant gloves, safety glasses and protective clothing.

  • Do not discharge uncured material into drains or natural waterways; dispose of waste in line with local regulations.

  • Store components in their original, tightly closed containers under recommended temperature conditions, away from heat and ignition sources.

Always consult the latest Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and relevant technical data / process specifications before use.

FAQs

Q1: What is Loctite EA 9396 mainly used for?
Loctite EA 9396 is mainly used as an aerospace-grade structural epoxy adhesive for metal, composite and honeycomb bonding in aircraft, transportation and high-performance industrial structures.

Q2: Is EA 9396 suitable for honeycomb sandwich panels?
Yes. Its toughened, gap-filling paste and curing behaviour make it well-suited for skin-to-core bonding in honeycomb sandwich constructions, when used in accordance with approved procedures.

Q3: Does Loctite EA 9396 cure at room temperature?
It can typically cure at ambient temperature or with elevated temperature depending on the process specification. Elevated cures are often used in aerospace to optimise properties and shorten cure time.

Q4: Which substrates does EA 9396 bond best?
It is designed for aluminium, steel, titanium, composites and honeycomb structures, provided surfaces are prepared according to the relevant specification (cleaning, abrasion, chemical treatment and/or priming).

Q5: Is the cured adhesive flexible?
EA 9396 cures to a rigid, toughened structural bond. It has improved tolerance to impact and fatigue compared with brittle epoxies, but it is not a soft or highly flexible sealant.

Q6: Can Loctite EA 9396 replace mechanical fasteners?
In some designs, structural adhesives can reduce fastener count or replace fasteners in specific regions, but this must be supported by engineering analysis, testing and certification. Many aerospace and high-performance designs use a combination of bonding and fastening.

Q7: How can a joint bonded with EA 9396 be disassembled or repaired?
Cured structural epoxies are difficult to remove. Repairs usually involve machining, cutting or scarfing and re-bonding according to an approved repair scheme. Never modify bonded structures without following the relevant engineering and repair documents.
