Product Overview

LOCTITE ABLESTIK G 909 is a one-component, high-performance epoxy adhesive engineered for structural bonding in demanding industrial applications—especially where dissimilar materials (e.g., copper, aluminium, fiberglass-reinforced plastics, oily steel) are used and exposure to wide temperature ranges is expected.
Its thixotropic (non-sag) consistency makes it ideal for vertical or overhead bonding, while the cure system is heat-activated (e.g., 90 min @ 100 °C) to develop full strength.

Key Features & Benefits

  • One-part formulation – no mixing required, making it user-friendly and reducing potential for mixing errors.

  • High strength structural bonding – tensile shear strength on aluminium ~40 N/mm² at 25 °C, ~20 N/mm² at 100 °C.

  • Excellent peel resistance – supports assemblies subjected to stress, vibration or dissimilar material joints.

  • Non-sag, thixotropic paste – ideal for bonding in vertical, inverted or complex assemblies without flow.

  • Broad operating temperature range – usable from –40 °C to +150 °C, enabling performance in harsh service conditions.

  • Versatile substrate compatibility – effective on copper, aluminium, FRP, oily steel and other challenging surfaces.

Application

  1. Surface preparation: Clean bonding surfaces thoroughly—remove oil, grease, dust, corrosion or coatings. For robust adhesion especially on oily or passive substrates, surface treatment (e.g., abrasion) may be needed.

  2. Adhesive application: Apply the ABLESTIK G 909 adhesive in a bead or layer on one surface. Because of its thixotropic paste nature, it will stay in position on vertical or overhead surfaces.

  3. Assembly: Bring the mating parts together and apply the appropriate clamp or pressure for proper interfacial contact.

  4. Curing: Cure according to the recommended profile (e.g., 90 min at 100 °C) to achieve full strength. Post-cure at higher temperature may further enhance performance.

  5. Handling & service: Allow the bonded assembly to reach its full rated strength before placing into service conditions.

  6. Disassembly / repair: If disassembly or repair is required, consult the TDS/SDS for recommended methods (often mechanical separation or heat).

Tips:

  • For best results, maintain adhesive film thickness and ensure full contact—gaps may reduce performance significantly.

  • Consider post-cure if your application will exceed the normal service temperature range.

  • Because the cure is heat-activated, ensure that oven or equipment thermal profiles follow the manufacturer’s guidance.

FAQs

Q1: Can ABLESTIK G 909 bond oily or untreated steel surfaces?
A1: Yes — it is formulated for use on oily steel and other challenging substrates, though cleaning/preparation still improves long-term durability.
Q2: What cure profile is needed to achieve full strength?
A2: Typical examples are 90 min at 100 °C, 30 min at 120 °C or 20 min at 150 °C, followed by optional post-cure for best performance.
Q3: What service temperature range can I expect?
A3: The adhesive is rated for service from –40 °C up to +150 °C.
Q4: Is the adhesive sag-resistant for vertical or overhead use?
A4: Yes — its thixotropic paste form ensures non-sag behavior on inclined surfaces.
Q5: Is mixing required before use?
A5: No — it is a one-component adhesive, so no mixing is needed.
