Loctite 586

Application:Thread Sealing
Material Compatibility:Metal
Colour:Red
Acrylic Type:Acrylic

Overview

Loctite 586 is a high-strength, anaerobic thread sealant engineered for rigid metal pipe and fitting threads in demanding industrial systems.

It cures in the absence of air and in contact with metal to create a permanent, leak-tight polymer seal that resists pressure, vibration and thermal cycling, providing long-term reliability in liquid and gas services.

Use Loctite 586 when you want a durable, “fit-and-forget” liquid seal that replaces PTFE tape and traditional pipe dopes on critical metal connections.

Key Features & Benefits

  • High-strength sealing
Creates a strong, locked-in seal on metal threads, ideal for joints that are not intended for frequent disassembly.

  • Excellent leak protection
Fills the voids in tapered threads to prevent seepage, weeping and micro-leaks under pressure.

  • Vibration and shock resistance
Cured material forms a solid plastic in the thread root, helping joints stay tight even under pulsating pressure and vibration.

  • Clean alternative to tapes and pastes
No tape shredding, no cold-flow, and no creeping—reduces rework and contamination risks in sensitive systems.

  • Good resistance to common industrial media
Suitable for many oils, coolants, fuels and utility fluids (always confirm compatibility for critical applications).

  • Helps prevent corrosion and seizure
Seals out moisture and contaminants in the thread spiral, helping to reduce rust, galling and thread seizure over time.

Typical Applications

Loctite 586 is intended for rigid metal pipe systems where joints are expected to remain assembled for long periods, such as:

  • Process piping on skids, compressors and pumps

  • Hydraulic and pneumatic pipework in industrial machinery

  • Plant utility lines for water, oils, inert gases and coolants

  • Threaded adapters, manifolds, plugs, reducers, elbows and tees

  • Applications where leak-free, long-term sealing is critical and disassembly is infrequent

Recommended substrates: carbon steel, stainless steel, brass, bronze and other metallic pipe fittings.
(Generally not recommended for plastics or oxygen-rich service unless specifically qualified.)

How Loctite 586 Works

Loctite 586 is an anaerobic methacrylate sealant:

  1. The liquid product is applied to the male thread.

  2. As the joint is assembled, the sealant is distributed through the thread spiral, filling all clearance gaps.

  3. In the absence of air and in contact with metal, it polymerizes to a tough, thermoset plastic, sealing against liquids and gases and locking the joint against loosening.

Because the cured sealant remains inside the thread, it cannot be extruded or washed out like tapes or soft sealing compounds.

Typical Property Snapshot

Values vary with substrate, temperature and clearance. Always consult the official technical data sheet and test in your own application.

  • Technology: Anaerobic thread sealant for metal pipe threads

  • Strength level: High – designed for joints not routinely disassembled

  • Viscosity: Paste-like liquid formulated to stay in the thread and minimize run-off

  • Cure profile: Fixtures in normal shop conditions; full cure typically achieved within hours at room temperature

  • Service temperature: Suitable for typical industrial utility and process temperatures (refer to TDS for exact range)

Directions for Use

  1. Surface preparation

    • Clean threads thoroughly to remove oil, grease, dirt and old sealants.

    • On passive metals or slightly oily parts, a suitable Loctite cleaner/primer can help achieve consistent cure.

  2. Application

    • Shake the bottle.

    • Apply a continuous bead of Loctite 586 around the male thread, one to two pitches back from the leading edge.

    • For large diameters, apply product along several thread flanks or to both male and female threads.

  3. Assembly

    • Assemble and tighten to the recommended torque.

    • Wipe away any excess sealant that is squeezed out externally.

  4. Cure and pressure testing

    • Allow adequate cure time before applying full system pressure (time depends on material, gap and temperature).

    • For critical services, perform a pressure or leak test before returning the system to operation.

  5. Disassembly

    • Because Loctite 586 is high-strength, disassembly may require greater torque and/or localized heat.

    • Use appropriate tools and safety precautions when breaking heavily loaded or aged joints.

Storage & Handling

  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat.

  • Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use; anaerobic products are designed to cure in the absence of air.

  • Follow the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for recommended personal protective equipment and handling practices.

FAQs

Q1: When should I choose Loctite 586 instead of a medium-strength sealant?
A: Use Loctite 586 when joints are critical and rarely disassembled, and you want maximum security against leakage and loosening under pressure and vibration.

Q2: Can I still disassemble a joint sealed with Loctite 586?
A: Yes, but Loctite 586 is high-strength, so disassembly typically requires higher torque and sometimes controlled heat compared with medium-strength sealants.

Q3: Do I need PTFE tape with Loctite 586?
A: No. Loctite 586 is intended to replace PTFE tape and traditional pipe dopes, providing both sealing and vibration resistance in one product.

Q4: Is Loctite 586 suitable for all fluids and gases?
A: Not automatically. Always check the technical data sheet and compatibility information, and run application-specific trials in safety-critical systems.
