Overview
Loctite 460 is a transparent, low-viscosity cyanoacrylate instant adhesive designed for low-odor, low-bloom bonding on close-fitting parts. It’s especially useful where appearance matters and the classic “white halo” or strong CA smell are unacceptable.
Key positioning (for understanding, not a spec sheet):
-
Technology: Low-odor, low-bloom ethyl cyanoacrylate
-
Appearance: Clear, colorless liquid
-
Viscosity: Low (wicks into tight, close-fitting joints)
-
Cure: Fixtures in seconds on many plastics, rubbers and metals
-
Best for: Cosmetic parts, small plastic/rubber components, assemblies near visible surfaces or electronics
Key Features & Benefits
-
Low odor, more comfortable to use
Formulated to reduce the sharp smell associated with standard cyanoacrylates, making it more pleasant for bench work and small assembly cells. -
Low-bloom for clean bond lines
Designed to minimize “blooming” or frosting, which is the white residue that can appear around CA joints—critical for visible plastics, housings and clear parts. -
Fast fixture on many substrates
Provides handling strength in seconds on rubber, many plastics and metals, supporting high-throughput production and quick repairs. -
Excellent for close-fitting parts
The low viscosity helps wick into tight gaps and close-fitting joints, making it ideal for precision assemblies and components that must fit accurately. -
Multi-substrate capability
Bonds most elastomers, many plastics and metals, letting one product cover a wide range of small parts and materials. -
Single-component, room-temperature cure
No mixing, no heat: simply apply, assemble and hold—easy for operators and minimal equipment.
Typical Applications
Loctite 460 is widely used where appearance, comfort and speed all matter:
-
Consumer & electronic device housings
-
Bonding clear or colored plastic covers, logos, switches and small internal parts
-
Joints near openings or vents where standard CA odor and blooming would be obvious
-
-
Precision plastic and rubber components
-
Bonding O-rings, seals, grommets and small molded parts
-
Fixing keypads, buttons and soft-touch parts onto plastic or metal substrates
-
-
Medical and lab equipment (non-invasive components)
-
Assembling plastic fixtures, clips, small guides and cable supports where clean appearance is important (subject to your own regulatory validation)
-
-
General assembly & MRO
-
Fast repairs of plastic housings, handles, knobs and covers
-
Small bonds where a standard CA would leave visible bloom around the joint
-
How to Use Loctite 460
Always follow the latest Henkel Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and your internal process instructions.
Step 1 – Surface preparation
-
Make sure surfaces are clean, dry and free from oil, dust and release agents.
-
Clean metals and plastics with an appropriate solvent or cleaner and allow to dry fully.
-
For very smooth metals or rigid plastics, light abrasion followed by cleaning can improve bond strength.
Step 2 – Application
-
Apply a small amount of Loctite 460 to one of the bonding surfaces.
-
Cyanoacrylates work best in thin layers; avoid flooding the joint. For very tight fits, the adhesive will wick along the interface.
Step 3 – Assembly
-
Immediately bring the parts together, align correctly and apply firm, even pressure.
-
Hold for several seconds until fixture is achieved (actual time depends on substrate, gap, temperature and humidity).
-
Avoid disturbing the joint during the first moments of cure; movement can reduce final strength.
Step 4 – Full cure & cleanup
-
Even though the joint reaches handling strength in seconds, allow up to 24 hours for full cure and maximum performance.
-
Wipe away any fresh squeeze-out quickly with a cloth and suitable solvent.
-
Once fully cured, excess adhesive is best removed by mechanical means (scraping, careful cutting) or with a dedicated cyanoacrylate debonder.
Safety & Handling
Even though Loctite 460 is low odor, it is still a cyanoacrylate and must be handled carefully:
-
Bonds skin and eyes very quickly – avoid contact; do not force apart bonded skin.
-
Use in a well-ventilated area to avoid irritation from vapors.
-
Wear safety glasses and suitable protective gloves (often nitrile) for regular use.
-
Store in a cool, dry place, tightly sealed, away from heat and direct sunlight to maintain shelf life.
-
Prevent uncured adhesive from entering drains or the environment; dispose of waste and empty containers following local regulations.
Always read the current Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for detailed, region-specific safety information.
FAQs
Q1: What is Loctite 460 mainly used for?
Loctite 460 is mainly used for fast, cosmetic bonding of close-fitting plastic, rubber and metal parts, especially where low odor and minimal blooming are important—for example in consumer devices, electronics and small assemblies.
Q2: How is Loctite 460 different from standard instant adhesives?
Compared with standard CAs, Loctite 460 is formulated to be low odor and low bloom, so it produces cleaner bond lines with less white residue around the joint, and is more comfortable to use in small workspaces.
Q3: Which materials does it bond best?
It is designed for most elastomers, many plastics and metals. Very low-surface-energy plastics like PE or PP may require a primer or a different adhesive.
Q4: How fast does Loctite 460 cure?
On active materials and tight joints, it typically reaches handling strength within seconds to under a minute. Full strength is achieved after several hours up to 24 hours, depending on conditions.
Q5: Can it fill large gaps?
Loctite 460 is a low-viscosity liquid optimized for close-fitting parts, not for large gaps. It can bridge very small gaps, but for wider bond lines or highly irregular surfaces, a gel CA, structural acrylic or epoxy may be better.
Q6: Is the cured bond flexible?
No. Like most cyanoacrylates, Loctite 460 cures to a rigid thermoplastic. It’s suitable for small joints and parts that see limited movement; for heavily flexing joints, consider a flexible adhesive system.
Q7: Can I disassemble parts bonded with Loctite 460?
CA bonds are generally permanent on most substrates. Disassembly usually requires a combination of mechanical force and debonder and often damages at least one component.
Q8: Is Loctite 460 suitable for medical or food-contact parts?
Use in regulated applications (medical, food-contact, drinking water, etc.) must be evaluated against relevant standards and confirmed with Henkel and your regulatory team. Loctite 460 is not automatically approved for such uses.
