Overview

Loctite 454 is a clear, non-sag cyanoacrylate gel developed for fast, clean bonding on vertical surfaces and porous materials. Unlike runny liquid CAs, Loctite 454 stays where you put it, making it ideal for overhead joints, gaps and rough or absorbent substrates.

It is supplied as a one-component, room-temperature curing instant adhesive that:

  • Cures in seconds when confined between close-fitting surfaces

  • Bonds a wide range of metals, plastics, rubbers and many porous materials

  • Is especially convenient for maintenance and repair, because it does not drip or flow

Typical positioning (approximate, non-spec values):

  • Technology: Ethyl cyanoacrylate gel

  • Appearance: Clear to slightly hazy gel

  • Viscosity: High (thixotropic gel, non-running)

  • Fixture time: Usually from a few seconds to under a minute, depending on substrate and conditions

  • Gap fill: Suitable for small gaps and irregular surfaces, better than very low-viscosity CAs

Key Features & Benefits

  • Non-drip gel, ideal for vertical surfaces
The gel consistency stays in place, making it perfect for overhead and vertical joints and for parts that can’t be laid flat.

  • Works well on porous and absorbent materials
Loctite 454 is designed for wood, leather, fabric, paper, cork, foam and other porous substrates, where thin CAs would soak in and starve the joint.

  • Fast fixture, single-component
No mixing or heating: apply one part, assemble, and obtain handling strength in seconds on many materials.

  • Multi-substrate capability
Bonds metals, most plastics, rubber, ceramics and composites, so one grade covers a wide variety of small assembly and repair tasks.

  • Reduced blooming / cleaner appearance vs. many liquids
The controlled gel bead often gives neater bond lines and less stray residue, helping with aesthetics on visible joints.

  • Easy positioning & gap bridging
The gel can bridge small gaps and surface irregularities and allows a bit more positioning control than very low-viscosity instant adhesives.

Typical Applications

Loctite 454 is widely used in MRO, assembly and craft/fixture work, for example:

  • Maintenance & repair (MRO)

    • Quick repairs of broken plastic housings, knobs, levers and covers

    • Securing gaskets, trims, badges and small fixtures on vertical panels

  • Wood, leather and textile bonding

    • Fast bonding of wood trims, leather straps, fabric reinforcements, felt pads and foam pieces

    • Handy for shop fixtures and prototypes using porous materials

  • Electronics & device assembly

    • Tack-bonding wire bundles, strain reliefs and small plastic parts where you don’t want adhesive to run into sensitive areas

    • Mounting small components or guides inside enclosures

  • Signage, display and general assembly

    • Bonding sign components, display elements and POS fixtures where clean appearance and quick handling strength are important

How to Use Loctite 454

Always follow the latest Henkel Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and your internal procedures.

Step 1 – Surface preparation

  1. Ensure surfaces are clean, dry and free from oil, dust and loose particles.

  2. Clean metals and plastics with a suitable solvent or industrial cleaner; allow to dry fully.

  3. For very smooth metals or rigid plastics, light abrasion followed by cleaning can improve bond strength.

Step 2 – Application

  1. Apply a small bead or a series of small dots of Loctite 454 to one of the bonding surfaces.

  2. Do not spread too thick; cyanoacrylates work best in thin layers. With porous materials, you may need slightly more adhesive to compensate for absorption, but avoid flooding the joint.

Step 3 – Assembly

  1. Immediately bring the parts together, align correctly and apply firm, even pressure.

  2. Hold for several seconds until the joint reaches handling strength (exact time depends on substrate, gap, humidity and temperature).

  3. Avoid moving the parts during the first moments of cure; movement can weaken the initial bond.

Step 4 – Cure & cleanup

  1. Although handling strength is reached quickly, allow full cure (up to 24 hours) before applying maximum load.

  2. Wipe away any fresh squeeze-out with a cloth and suitable solvent.

  3. Once fully cured, excess adhesive is best removed by mechanical means (scraping, careful cutting) or a dedicated cyanoacrylate debonder.

Safety & Handling

Like all cyanoacrylate instant adhesives, Loctite 454 should be handled carefully:

  • Bonds skin and eyes in seconds – avoid contact; do not pull bonded skin apart forcibly.

  • Use in a well-ventilated area; vapors can irritate eyes and respiratory system.

  • Wear safety glasses and suitable gloves (often nitrile) for regular use.

  • Store in a cool, dry place, tightly closed, away from heat and direct sunlight.

  • Do not allow uncured adhesive to enter drains or the environment; dispose of waste according to local regulations.

Always read the current Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for detailed information.

FAQs

Q1: What is Loctite 454 mainly used for?
Loctite 454 is mainly used for fast, clean bonding on vertical, overhead and porous substrates, such as wood, leather, fabric, metal and many plastics, where a non-drip instant adhesive gel is preferable to a runny liquid.

Q2: How is Loctite 454 different from standard liquid super glue?
Standard liquid cyanoacrylates are very low viscosity and can run or soak into porous materials. Loctite 454 is a gel, so it stays where you apply it, making it better for porous, rough or vertical surfaces and for controlling bead placement.

Q3: Which materials does it bond best?
It bonds most metals, plastics, rubbers, wood, leather, fabric, foam, paper and ceramics. Very low-surface-energy plastics (like PE, PP) may require a primer or a different adhesive system.

Q4: How fast does Loctite 454 cure?
Fixture is usually achieved in seconds to under a minute, depending on the materials, joint gap, humidity and temperature. Full strength is typically reached within several hours up to 24 hours.

Q5: Can Loctite 454 fill large gaps?
It can bridge small gaps and surface irregularities better than thin liquids, but it is still an instant adhesive designed for close-fitting parts. For very large gaps or flexible joints, a structural acrylic, epoxy or polyurethane may be more suitable.

Q6: Is the cured adhesive flexible?
No. Loctite 454 cures to a rigid thermoplastic typical of cyanoacrylates. It can tolerate some movement in small joints, but heavily flexing or peeling loads may require a more flexible adhesive.

Q7: Can I disassemble a joint bonded with Loctite 454?
Cyanoacrylate bonds are generally considered permanent on many substrates. Disassembly usually requires mechanical force, careful use of debonders and often damages at least one of the parts.

Q8: Is Loctite 454 suitable for food or medical contact?
Not by default. Any use in regulated applications (food, medical, potable water, etc.) must be evaluated against regulatory and biocompatibility requirements and confirmed directly with Henkel and your compliance team.
