Product Overview
LOCTITE 380 is a one-part, low-viscosity cyanoacrylate adhesive toughened with rubber to provide enhanced flexibility and durability. Designed for bonding close-fitting parts, it performs well on metals, rubbers and certain plastics. With excellent shear and peel strength and a quick fixture time of around 90 seconds, it’s ideal for applications requiring reliable and fast-setting bonds in assemblies.
Key Features & Benefits
-
Rubber-toughened formulation — offers improved impact and peel resistance compared to standard CA adhesives.
-
Low viscosity — flows easily into tight fits while maintaining controlled application.
-
Strong adhesion to metals, rubbers and selected plastics — suited for mixed-material assemblies.
-
Fast fixturing (~90 seconds on steel) — supports efficient assembly.
-
Service temperature up to ~107 °C (225 °F) — suitable for many industrial applications.
Application
Surface Preparation:
-
Clean both surfaces thoroughly — remove oil, grease, dust and old adhesive residues. A suitable degreaser is recommended (e.g., LOCTITE SF 7070).
-
For challenging plastics, consider a primer (e.g., LOCTITE SF 770) to improve adhesion.
Application:
-
Apply a small amount of LOCTITE 380 to one of the parts. Because of the rapid cure, accurate positioning is essential.
-
Bring the mating part into position and hold/clamp until initial fixture (~90 seconds).
Curing / Handling:
-
Initial bond strength reached quickly; full strength develops within 24 hours under ambient conditions.
-
Avoid heavy loading until full cure is achieved.
Disassembly / Repair:
-
For removal or repair, follow manufacturer’s instructions. Typically, heat or mechanical force may be required.
Tips:
-
Use minimal adhesive to avoid bleed-out or blooming (white haze).
-
Ensure tight fit parts and correct gap (<0.10 mm) for optimum performance.
-
Because of toughened formulation, this product is better suited for assemblies subjected to shock or vibration.
FAQs
-
Q: Can LOCTITE 380 bond rubber to metal effectively?
A: Yes — its rubber-toughened formulation provides strong adhesion and impact resistance between rubber and metal. -
Q: What gap size is acceptable for LOCTITE 380?
A: Approximate gap fill of ~0.10 mm for optimum strength. -
Q: Does this adhesive suit plastic substrates?
A: It can, but performance depends on plastic type; for low-surface-energy plastics, use an appropriate primer. -
Q: What temperature range can it endure?
A: Up to about 107 °C (225 °F) under typical conditions. -
Q: What’s the cure time before the part can be handled?
A: Approximately 90 seconds to initial fixture on steel; full strength over 24 hours.
