Overview

Loctite 2760 is a red, high-strength, fast-curing anaerobic threadlocker formulated for permanent locking and sealing of metal fasteners, even when surfaces are lightly oily or difficult to clean perfectly. It cures in the absence of air between close-fitting metal surfaces, forming a tough, cross-linked plastic that fills the thread gap.

Once cured, Loctite 2760:

  • Prevents loosening from shock, impact and continuous vibration

  • Seals the helical thread path against fluids and gases

  • Helps protect engaged threads from rust, fretting and galling over long service

It’s particularly suited to demanding industrial and automotive assemblies where you want maximum reliability, minimal pre-treatment and fast turnaround.

Why choose Loctite 2760?

1) High strength for permanent retention
Loctite 2760 is a high-strength red grade. Fasteners are effectively fixed in place for the life of the equipment. Disassembly of larger bolts typically requires significant torque and often heat, making it ideal when loosening simply cannot be allowed.

2) Primerless and oil-resistant
The formulation is designed to cure without a separate primer and to tolerate light oil contamination on threads. That helps in real-world production and MRO environments where parts arrive with residual cutting oils or corrosion-protection films.

3) Fast curing for production lines
Loctite 2760 reaches handling strength quickly at room temperature, supporting shorter clamp times and higher throughput on assembly lines, without ovens or external energy sources.

4) Locks and seals in a single step
By filling the clearance between male and female threads, 2760 locks the fastener against movement and seals the thread path against leakage and corrosion, often allowing you to simplify hardware (fewer lock washers, split pins and separate sealants).

5) Reliable on a wide range of metals
Loctite 2760 performs well on common engineering metals, including carbon steel and many plated fasteners, making it a versatile choice for mixed assemblies across a plant or vehicle platform.

Typical Applications

Automotive, truck and off-road

  • Bolts and studs on engines, transmissions and differentials

  • Chassis and suspension fasteners that must not loosen in service

  • Powertrain brackets, mounts and structural joints

Industrial machinery and equipment

  • Fasteners on pumps, gearboxes, compressors and motors

  • Structural bolted joints in heavy equipment and process lines

  • High-vibration assemblies where conventional mechanical locking is not enough

General permanent threadlocking

  • Metal fasteners where loosening is unacceptable and disassembly is rare

  • Applications where parts are lightly oily and thorough cleaning is difficult

Loctite 2760 is intended for metal-to-metal threaded joints and is not recommended for plastics or for pure oxygen / strong oxidizer systems.

How to Use Loctite 2760

Step 1 – Prepare the threads

  • Remove loose rust, dust and old threadlocker from male and female threads.

  • Wipe away heavy grease, thick oil and anti-seize; light oil films are usually acceptable.

  • For very critical joints, solvent-clean and dry the threads for maximum performance.

Step 2 – Apply the product

  • Shake the bottle briefly.

  • Apply a continuous bead of Loctite 2760 to the male threads, covering the full engagement length.

  • For blind holes, apply a small amount into the female threads so adhesive is pushed through the joint during assembly.

Step 3 – Assemble and tighten

  • Assemble the joint promptly and torque fasteners to the specified values.

  • Avoid repeatedly loosening and retightening once the adhesive has begun to fixture, as this can disturb the bond line.

Step 4 – Cure and return to service

  • Allow the assembly to remain undisturbed until it reaches handling strength.

  • For maximum performance, especially in high-load and high-vibration applications, allow up to 24 hours at room temperature before exposing the joint to full service conditions.

Step 5 – Disassembly (if ever required)

  • Loctite 2760 is a high-strength permanent grade.

  • Small fasteners may be removable with strong hand tools; larger bolts typically require:

    • Localized heating of the fastener area (only if compatible with the design and base materials) to soften the adhesive, and

    • High torque with appropriate tools to break the bond while the joint is still hot.

Safety & Handling

Typical points for high-strength anaerobic threadlockers:

  • May cause eye and skin irritation on contact

  • Repeated or prolonged exposure may cause skin sensitisation in susceptible individuals

  • Vapours or mists can cause mild respiratory irritation in poorly ventilated areas

  • Uncured product may be harmful to aquatic life if released uncontrolled

Good practice

  • Use in a well-ventilated area.

  • Avoid contact with skin and eyes; wear safety glasses and suitable protective gloves.

  • Wash hands thoroughly after handling and before eating or drinking.

  • Do not allow uncured adhesive to enter drains or natural waterways.

  • Store in the original, tightly closed container, in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight.

FAQs

Q1: What is Loctite 2760 mainly used for?
Loctite 2760 is used for permanent locking and sealing of metal fasteners in applications where vibration, shock and light oil contamination are present, and where fasteners are not expected to be removed during routine service.

Q2: How is Loctite 2760 different from standard red grades like 271 or 270?
Loctite 2760 is also a high-strength red threadlocker, but it’s oriented toward primerless, fast curing and better performance on lightly oily or less-than-perfectly-clean surfaces, which can make it more forgiving in production and maintenance environments.

Q3: Is Loctite 2760 removable?
It is considered a permanent threadlocker. Small fasteners may be removed with strong hand tools, but for larger bolts you should expect to use localized heat and high torque to break the bond. If routine disassembly is required, a medium-strength blue grade is usually a better choice.

Q4: Can Loctite 2760 be used on stainless steel or plated fasteners?
Yes. Loctite 2760 is designed to work on common engineering metals, including many stainless and plated fasteners. Cure speed may vary with substrate; allow sufficient time before applying full load, especially on passive metals.

Q5: Is Loctite 2760 oil-tolerant, or do I still need to clean parts?
Loctite 2760 is oil-resistant and can cure through light oil films, which is useful on “as-received” parts. However, you should still remove heavy grease, thick oil and anti-seize to achieve consistent high strength, especially in critical or safety-related joints.

Q6: Can I use Loctite 2760 on plastic threads or mixed metal/plastic joints?
No. Anaerobic threadlockers such as Loctite 2760 are formulated for metal-to-metal threads and can cause stress cracking in some plastics. They also do not cure properly on non-metallic threads. For plastic or mixed joints, use a plastic-compatible adhesive.

Q7: Does Loctite 2760 also act as a sealant?
Yes. By filling the gap between male and female threads, Loctite 2760 locks and seals in one step, helping to prevent fluid and gas leakage along the thread helix and improving corrosion resistance. It does not replace flange gaskets between mating faces, but it is very effective at sealing through-thread leak paths.
