Overview
Loctite 275 is a high strength, anaerobic threadlocker designed to lock and seal large metal bolts, studs and nuts. It cures in the absence of air between closely fitting metal threads, forming a tough, cross-linked polymer that resists vibration, shock and thermal cycling.
Once cured in the thread interface, Loctite 275:
-
Prevents loosening from vibration and dynamic loads
-
Provides a reliable seal against leakage along the thread path
-
Helps protect threads from corrosion and fretting
-
Reduces the need for lock washers, double-nutting and other mechanical locking devices
It is especially suitable for medium to large fasteners in heavy equipment where disassembly is infrequent and secure retention is critical.
Key Features & Benefits
-
High strength threadlocker
Designed for permanent locking of threaded metal fasteners. Disassembly typically requires heat and high torque. -
Anaerobic, one-component formula
Cures when confined between metal surfaces without air. No mixing, no separate activator in most applications. -
Optimised for larger fasteners
Viscosity and cure profile are suited to medium and large diameter bolts and studs, making it ideal for structural joints. -
Locks and seals in one step
Fills the clearance between threads, locking the fastener and sealing the helical leak path against oils and many industrial fluids. -
Improved reliability under vibration
Maintains preload in bolted joints subjected to vibration, impact and load cycling, reducing re-tightening and unplanned downtime.
Typical Applications
Loctite 275 is commonly used on metal threaded fasteners in:
-
Heavy equipment & construction machinery
-
Frame, boom and chassis bolts
-
Undercarriage and attachment fasteners
-
-
Industrial gearboxes & drives
-
Coupling bolts, bearing cap bolts and housing studs
-
Fasteners on large motors, pumps and compressors
-
-
Power generation & process equipment
-
Turbine and generator mounting bolts
-
Structural fasteners around heavy rotating and stationary equipment
-
For joints that must be regularly disassembled, a medium strength threadlocker may be more appropriate.
How to Use Loctite 275
Step 1 – Surface preparation
-
Ensure threads are clean, dry and free from oil, grease, dirt and old threadlocker.
-
Use a suitable cleaner or degreaser where necessary.
-
Remove rust or heavy contamination with a wire brush or similar tool.
-
On very passive metals (e.g. some stainless or plated parts), an anaerobic activator may be recommended to optimise cure.
Step 2 – Apply the threadlocker
-
Shake the bottle briefly if required.
-
Apply a continuous bead of Loctite 275 to the male threads, covering the area that will be engaged.
-
For blind holes, apply a small amount to the female threads to avoid trapping air pockets.
Step 3 – Assemble and tighten
-
Assemble the parts immediately after application.
-
Tighten to the specified torque or tension according to your engineering procedure.
-
Avoid repeatedly loosening and retightening once the product has been applied.
Step 4 – Cure & return to service
-
Loctite 275 will begin to fixture (reach handling strength) as it cures between the metal threads.
-
Full cure time depends on temperature, material reactivity, thread size and gap.
-
Only subject the joint to maximum load, vibration and operating temperature after full cure has been reached as per your procedure.
Step 5 – Disassembly
-
Because Loctite 275 is a high strength product, disassembly usually requires:
-
High torque tools, and/or
-
Localised heating of the fastener (typically to soften the cured adhesive), followed by removal while hot.
-
-
Clean threads thoroughly before reassembly and apply fresh product.
Safety & Handling
-
Avoid skin and eye contact with uncured product; may cause irritation or sensitisation.
-
Use in a well-ventilated area and avoid inhaling vapours or mists.
-
Wear appropriate PPE: safety glasses and chemical-resistant gloves as a minimum.
-
Do not allow uncured product to enter drains or natural waterways.
-
Store in the original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight.
Always consult the current Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for Loctite 275 before use.
FAQs
Q1: What is Loctite 275 mainly used for?
Loctite 275 is mainly used for high strength locking and sealing of larger metal fasteners in heavy-duty machinery, drives and structural joints where loosening is unacceptable.
Q2: Is Loctite 275 removable?
Yes, but it is a high strength threadlocker. Disassembly generally requires significant torque and often localised heating of the fastener to break the bond.
Q3: Can I use Loctite 275 on stainless steel or plated fasteners?
Yes. It can be used on many common fastener materials. Cure speed may be slower on passive metals such as some stainless steels or heavily plated parts; an activator or extended cure time may be helpful.
Q4: Does Loctite 275 seal as well as lock the threads?
Yes. It seals the helical gap between threads, helping prevent leakage of oils and many industrial fluids while also locking the fastener against loosening.
Q5: Can Loctite 275 be used on plastic fasteners or plastic housings?
No. It is designed for metal-to-metal threaded joints. Anaerobic products may not cure correctly on plastics and can stress certain plastic materials.
Q6: When should I choose a medium strength threadlocker instead?
Choose a medium strength grade when:
-
Fasteners require regular removal for service, or
-
Disassembly with standard hand tools and no heat is a requirement.
Q7: Does Loctite 275 replace lock washers and other mechanical locking devices?
In many applications, yes. It can replace or reduce traditional locking devices, but any change should be validated by engineering evaluation and testing, especially for safety-critical joints.
