Overview
Loctite 271 is a red, high-strength, medium-viscosity anaerobic threadlocker designed for the permanent locking and sealing of metal fasteners. It cures when confined between close-fitting metal surfaces in the absence of air, forming a tough, cross-linked polymer that fills the thread gap.
Once cured, Loctite 271:
-
Resists loosening from shock, impact and continuous vibration
-
Helps seal the helix against fluid and gas leakage
-
Protects engaged threads from rust and fretting corrosion over time
It is typically chosen where fasteners are not expected to be removed in normal service, or where removal can be done with heat and high torque during overhaul.
Why choose Loctite 271?
1) High-strength retention for safety-critical joints
Loctite 271 delivers very high breakaway and prevailing torque on steel fasteners, making it well suited for joints where unplanned loosening could cause safety issues, damage or costly downtime.
2) Locks and seals in one operation
By wetting the full thread engagement and curing into the gap, 271 both locks the fastener and seals the thread path. In many applications this allows elimination of separate lock washers and thread sealants, simplifying the bill of materials.
3) Versatile for common industrial fastener sizes
The medium viscosity makes it suitable for typical machine bolt sizes, from smaller screws through to medium and larger studs used in pumps, motors and gearboxes. (For extremely large bolts, a high-viscosity heavy-duty grade like Loctite 277 is often selected.)
4) Durable performance over a wide temperature range
Loctite 271 maintains its locking and sealing performance across the temperature range commonly encountered in industrial equipment and powertrain assemblies (roughly from below freezing up to engine-bay temperatures).
5) Single-component and inspection-friendly
Supplied as a one-part red liquid in squeeze bottles, 271 requires no mixing. The adhesive is also fluorescent under UV light, helping production and QA teams quickly confirm that threadlocker has been applied.
Typical Applications
Heavy-duty industrial machinery
-
Bolts and studs on pumps, compressors and gearboxes
-
Fasteners in presses, crushers, mixers and heavy processing equipment
-
Mounting bolts on large electric motors and drives
Automotive, truck and off-road
-
Engine, drivetrain and chassis fasteners that must never back off in service
-
Suspension and frame bolts on trucks, construction equipment and agricultural machinery
General permanent threadlocking
-
Metal fasteners where maximum resistance to loosening is required
-
Joints where mechanical locking devices alone (lock washers, split pins) are insufficient or inconvenient
Loctite 271 is designed for metal-to-metal threaded joints and is not recommended for plastics or for pure oxygen / strong oxidizer service.
How to Use Loctite 271
Step 1 – Prepare the threads
-
Remove loose rust, old threadlocker and dirt from male and female threads.
-
Wipe off heavy oils, greases and anti-seize compounds. Light preservative oil films may be tolerated, but clean metal gives the best and most consistent results.
Step 2 – Apply the threadlocker
-
Shake the bottle briefly.
-
Apply a continuous bead of Loctite 271 along the male threads, covering the full engagement length.
-
For blind holes, apply a small amount into the female thread so the adhesive is pushed through the joint as the fastener is installed.
Step 3 – Assembly and tightening
-
Assemble the parts and tighten to the specified torque.
-
Avoid repeatedly backing off and re-tightening after the product begins to fixture, as this can disrupt the bond line.
Step 4 – Cure and return to service
-
Allow the joint to sit undisturbed until handling strength is reached.
-
For maximum performance, allow up to 24 hours at room temperature before applying full load, pressure or severe vibration, especially on passive metals or at low temperatures.
Step 5 – Disassembly (if ever required)
-
Loctite 271 is a high-strength permanent grade.
-
For larger fasteners, disassembly typically requires localized heating of the fastener area (only if compatible with your base materials and design) plus high torque with appropriate tools to break the bond.
Safety & Handling
Safety information for high-strength anaerobic threadlockers such as Loctite 271 typically notes that the product:
-
Can cause eye and skin irritation, and may cause sensitization in susceptible individuals.
-
May cause mild respiratory irritation if vapours are inhaled in poorly ventilated areas.
-
Is harmful to aquatic life if uncured product is released uncontrolled.
Basic good practice:
-
Use in a well-ventilated area.
-
Avoid contact with skin and eyes; wear safety glasses and suitable protective gloves.
-
Wash hands thoroughly after handling and before eating or drinking.
-
Do not allow uncured product to enter drains or watercourses.
-
Store in the original, tightly closed container, in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight.

FAQs
Q1: When should I choose Loctite 271 instead of 242, 243 or 263?
Choose Loctite 271 when you require permanent locking on metal fasteners, and routine disassembly is not planned. Medium-strength blues like 242/243 are better when regular maintenance and removal with hand tools are required. Loctite 263 is another permanent red grade with enhanced oil-tolerance and primerless performance; 271 is often used where standard cleaning is available and classic 271 approvals are specified.
Q2: Is Loctite 271 removable at all?
Yes, but removal can be difficult. Loctite 271 is a high-strength permanent threadlocker. Small screws may be loosened with strong hand tools, but larger bolts usually require localized heating of the joint and high torque to break the bond. If easy removal is needed, use a medium- or low-strength grade instead.
Q3: What fastener sizes are best for Loctite 271?
Loctite 271 is commonly used on medium and larger metal fasteners in heavy-duty service—engine bolts, pump and gearbox studs, structural bolts, and similar. For extremely large studs, a high-viscosity grade such as Loctite 277 may be more appropriate; for very small screws, a lower-strength grade like Loctite 222 is usually preferred.
Q4: Can Loctite 271 be applied to stainless steel and plated fasteners?
Yes. Loctite 271 cures on most common metals, including stainless steel and many plated fasteners. Cure speed may be slower on “passive” metals, so allow extra time before applying full load, or consult Henkel if you need very rapid strength build-up.
Q5: Is Loctite 271 oil-tolerant?
Loctite 271 can handle light oil residues, but heavy oil films, grease or anti-seize will reduce performance. For heavily oiled parts, clean the threads before application, or consider an explicitly oil-tolerant grade such as Loctite 263 when full cleaning is impractical.
Q6: Can I use Loctite 271 on plastic threads or mixed metal/plastic joints?
No. Like other anaerobic threadlockers, Loctite 271 is formulated for metal-to-metal joints and can cause stress cracking in some plastic materials. For plastic fasteners or metal/plastic combinations, use an adhesive designed specifically for plastics.
Q7: Does Loctite 271 also act as a sealant?
Yes. By filling voids between threads, Loctite 271 locks and seals at the same time, helping prevent leakage of fluids and gases through the thread helix and protecting against corrosion. It does not replace flange gaskets on mating surfaces, but it is very effective for sealing through-thread leak paths.
