Overview
Loctite 2701 is a green, high-strength anaerobic threadlocker designed for the permanent locking and sealing of threaded metal fasteners. It cures in the absence of air between close-fitting metal surfaces, forming a tough, cross-linked plastic that fills the thread gap.
Once cured, Loctite 2701:
-
Prevents loosening caused by shock, vibration and dynamic loading
-
Seals the helix against fluid and gas leaks
-
Helps protect engaged threads from corrosion and fretting
It is particularly useful where you need high-strength locking on passive substrates (stainless steel, plated fasteners) and where light oil films cannot be completely avoided.
Why choose Loctite 2701?
1) Permanent-strength retention
Loctite 2701 is a high-strength grade. Fasteners are effectively fixed in place; removal, especially for larger bolts, usually requires high torque and often heat. It’s ideal where unplanned loosening would cause costly downtime or safety risk.
2) Primerless on passive metals
The formulation is designed to cure without primer on both active metals (carbon steel, brass) and more passive surfaces such as stainless steel, plated hardware and some coated fasteners, simplifying the process and reducing consumables.
3) Oil-tolerant for real-world conditions
Loctite 2701 is engineered to cure reliably through light films of industrial oils left from machining, cutting or corrosion protection. Heavy grease or thick oil should still be removed, but the product is more forgiving than traditional grades.
4) Locks and seals in one easy step
By filling the entire thread engagement, 2701 locks the fastener and seals the thread path. In many designs it can replace or reduce mechanical locking elements such as spring washers, while also improving leak resistance.
5) Single-component, easy to inspect
Loctite 2701 is supplied as a one-part green liquid. It dispenses easily from standard bottles or metering equipment and is typically fluorescent under UV light, making it simple to verify application during quality checks.
Typical Applications
Heavy-duty machinery and process equipment
-
Bolts and studs in pumps, motors, gearboxes and compressors
-
Fasteners in presses, mixers and high-vibration industrial equipment
-
Structural fasteners that must remain locked for the life of the machine
Stainless and plated fasteners
-
Stainless steel bolts in food, chemical or outdoor equipment
-
Plated or coated fasteners where primer use is undesirable or restricted
General permanent threadlocking
-
Metal fasteners where maximum resistance to loosening is required
-
Joints where mechanical locking devices alone are not enough
Loctite 2701 is designed for metal-to-metal threaded joints and is not recommended for plastics or for pure oxygen / strong oxidizer service.
How to Use Loctite 2701
Step 1 – Surface preparation
-
Remove loose rust, dirt and any old threadlocker from male and female threads.
-
Wipe off heavy grease, thick oil and anti-seize.
-
Light “as-received” oil films are usually acceptable, but cleaner metal gives better and more consistent results.
Step 2 – Apply the threadlocker
-
Shake the bottle briefly.
-
Apply a continuous bead of Loctite 2701 to the male threads, covering the full engagement length.
-
For blind holes, place a small amount into the female threads so adhesive is driven through the whole joint during assembly.
Step 3 – Assemble and tighten
-
Assemble the parts and torque the fastener to the specified value.
-
Avoid repeated loosening and retightening once the product has begun to fixture.
Step 4 – Cure and return to service
-
Allow the assembly to remain undisturbed until handling strength is reached.
-
For maximum performance, allow up to 24 hours at room temperature before subjecting the joint to full load, vibration or maximum operating temperature.
Step 5 – Disassembly (if ever required)
-
As a high-strength permanent grade, Loctite 2701 often requires:
-
Localized heating of the fastener area (only if compatible with your base materials and design) to soften the cured adhesive, and
-
High torque with appropriate tools to break the bond while still hot.
-
Safety & Handling
Typical safety profile for high-strength anaerobic threadlockers like Loctite 2701:
-
May cause skin and eye irritation on contact
-
Repeated or prolonged exposure may cause skin sensitization
-
Vapours or mists can cause mild respiratory irritation in poorly ventilated spaces
-
Uncured product may be harmful to aquatic life if released uncontrolled
Basic precautions:
-
Use only in well-ventilated areas.
-
Avoid contact with skin and eyes; wear safety glasses and suitable protective gloves.
-
Wash hands thoroughly after handling and before eating or drinking.
-
Do not dispose of uncured product into drains or natural waterways.
-
Store in the original, tightly closed container, in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight.

FAQs
Q1: How is Loctite 2701 different from Loctite 270?
Both are green, high-strength threadlockers for permanent locking. Loctite 2701 is formulated to offer better curing on passive metals and improved performance on lightly oiled surfaces, making it more suitable when you have stainless, plated fasteners or limited cleaning.
Q2: When should I choose Loctite 2701 instead of Loctite 243 or 246?
Choose Loctite 2701 when you need permanent, high-strength locking and are comfortable that removal will require significant torque and possibly heat. Use 243 or 246 when you want medium strength that can be undone with standard hand tools during regular maintenance.
Q3: Is Loctite 2701 primerless and oil-tolerant?
Yes. Loctite 2701 is designed to cure without a separate primer on many passive metals and to tolerate light films of industrial oils. However, for best performance, you should still remove heavy grease and thick oil from the threads.
Q4: Can I use Loctite 2701 on stainless steel and galvanized or plated fasteners?
Yes. Loctite 2701 was developed to work well on passive metals, including stainless steel and many plated fasteners. Cure may still be slower than on plain carbon steel, so allow sufficient time before loading the joint fully.
Q5: Is Loctite 2701 suitable for small screws?
Because it is a high-strength grade, Loctite 2701 can generate very high breakaway torque relative to the strength of small screws or soft alloys. For tiny or delicate fasteners, a low-strength purple grade (222/222MS) is usually safer.
Q6: Can I use Loctite 2701 on plastic threads or mixed metal/plastic joints?
No. Anaerobic threadlockers like Loctite 2701 are intended for metal-to-metal threads and may cause stress cracking in certain plastics. They also do not cure properly on non-metallic surfaces.
Q7: Does Loctite 2701 also act as a sealant?
Yes. By filling the gap between male and female threads, Loctite 2701 locks and seals in one step. It helps prevent leakage of fluids and gases through the thread helix and provides a barrier against corrosion, though it does not replace flange gaskets on mating faces.
