Overview
Loctite 270 is a green, high-strength anaerobic threadlocker designed for the permanent locking and sealing of threaded fasteners. It cures in the absence of air between close-fitting metal surfaces, forming a tough thermoset plastic that prevents loosening and leakage caused by shock and vibration.
Typical uses include studs in motor housings, nuts on studs in pump housings, gearboxes, presses and other heavy-duty assemblies where maximum strength is required and routine disassembly is not expected.
Why choose Loctite 270?
1) True permanent-strength retention
Loctite 270 is formulated as a permanent threadlocker. Once cured, it delivers very high breakaway and prevailing torque, so large fasteners stay locked even under severe vibration and dynamic loading.
2) Works on all common metals, including passive substrates
The product is suitable for steel, brass and other active metals, and also for passive substrates such as stainless steel, aluminium and plated surfaces, without a separate activator in many cases.
3) Tolerant of minor industrial oil contamination
Loctite 270 is proven to tolerate light coatings of engine oils, corrosion-prevention oils and cutting fluids, helping it cure reliably on “as-received” parts in typical production environments. Heavy contamination still needs cleaning, but small residues are not usually a problem.
4) Threadlocking and sealing in one step
By filling the thread gap, 270 not only locks the fastener but also seals the helix against leakage of gases and fluids, and helps protect threads from corrosion over time.
5) Can still be disassembled with heat
Although it’s a permanent grade, joints can generally be disassembled by heating the fastener to around 300 °C (only if compatible with the base materials and design) and then loosening while still hot.
Typical Applications
Heavy-duty threaded joints
-
Studs into motor housings and engine blocks
-
Nuts onto studs in pump housings and compressors
-
Large bolts and studs in gearboxes, presses and heavy machinery
High-vibration environments
-
Fasteners on rotating equipment subject to shock and impact
-
Structural and frame bolts on industrial equipment
-
Critical joints where loosening would cause costly downtime or safety risk
General-purpose permanent threadlocking
-
Metal fasteners up to around M20 / 3⁄4″ where permanent retention is desired
-
Replacement for mechanical locking devices (spring washers, split pins) in many designs
Loctite 270 is intended for metal-to-metal assemblies and is not recommended for plastics.
How to Use Loctite 270
Step 1 – Surface preparation
-
Remove loose rust, dirt and old threadlocker.
-
Wipe off heavy oil, grease and cutting fluids.
-
Light films of industrial oil are usually tolerated, but cleaner metal gives higher strength.
Step 2 – Product application
-
Shake the bottle.
-
Apply a continuous bead of Loctite 270 to the male thread, covering the full engagement length.
-
For blind holes, apply some product into the female thread so it is pushed up through the joint as the fastener is installed.
Step 3 – Assembly and tightening
-
Assemble the joint and tighten fasteners to the specified torque.
-
Avoid moving or re-aligning the joint once the product has begun to fixture.
Step 4 – Cure and return to service
-
Allow sufficient time for fixture (handling strength) and full cure, considering temperature and substrate. For critical joints, plan for up to 24 hours at room temperature before applying full load or pressure.
Step 5 – Disassembly (if ever required)
-
Because Loctite 270 is high strength, disassembly will usually require:
-
Heating the fastener area to approximately 300 °C where compatible.
-
Using appropriate tools and leverage to loosen while still hot.
-
Safety & Handling
Safety Data Sheets for Loctite 270 typically indicate that the product:
-
Can cause skin and eye irritation, and may cause skin sensitisation on repeated contact.
-
May be harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
Basic precautions:
-
Wear safety glasses and protective gloves when dispensing.
-
Use in well-ventilated areas; avoid inhaling vapours.
-
Avoid release to the environment; do not pour uncured product into drains.
-
Store in the original, tightly closed container, in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight.
Always consult the latest SDS for your country/region before use.
FAQ – Loctite 270
Q1: When should I choose Loctite 270 instead of Loctite 243?
Use Loctite 270 when you want permanent locking on metal fasteners that should not come loose in normal service, especially larger bolts and studs in heavy-duty equipment. Use Loctite 243 when you need strong locking but also regular disassembly and serviceability.
Q2: What fastener sizes is Loctite 270 best for?
Loctite 270 is commonly recommended for fasteners up to around M20 (3⁄4″), especially in heavy-duty applications like pumps, motors and gearboxes where high strength is required.
Q3: Is Loctite 270 removable?
It’s a high-strength “permanent” grade. Smaller fasteners may be removable with heavy hand tools, but larger joints typically require localized heating up to ~300 °C to soften the adhesive before disassembly. If routine removal is required, choose a medium-strength product instead.
Q4: Does Loctite 270 work on stainless steel and plated fasteners?
Yes. Loctite 270 is designed to work on all common metals, including passive substrates such as stainless steel, aluminium and plated surfaces. Cure may be slightly slower on passive metals, so allow adequate time for full strength to develop.
Q5: How oil-tolerant is Loctite 270?
The product is proven to tolerate minor contamination from industrial oils such as engine oil, corrosion-prevention oils and cutting fluids. However, heavy or thick oil, grease or anti-seize will reduce performance, so heavy contamination should always be cleaned off first.
Q6: Can I use Loctite 270 on plastic threads?
No. Like other anaerobic threadlockers, Loctite 270 is formulated for metal-to-metal threads and may cause stress cracking in some plastics. For plastic or mixed joints, use an adhesive designed specifically for plastic substrates.
Q7: Is Loctite 270 suitable for food or beverage environments?
Loctite 270 is NSF P1 registered, which means it is acceptable for use as a maintenance chemical in and around food processing areas when used according to NSF guidelines, but it is not intended for direct food contact surfaces. Always verify compatibility with your local regulations.
