Overview

Loctite 2422 is a high-temperature, medium-strength anaerobic threadlocker formulated to lock and seal threaded metal fasteners that see both elevated temperatures and vibration. It cures in the absence of air between close-fitting metal surfaces, forming a tough, cross-linked polymer in the thread gap.

Once cured, Loctite 2422:

  • Helps prevent loosening from shock, impact and continuous vibration

  • Seals the helical thread path against fluid and gas seepage

  • Provides a barrier against corrosion and fretting on the engaged threads

It is particularly useful where hardware runs hot, but planned disassembly during shutdowns or overhauls is still required.

Why choose Loctite 2422?

1) Built for elevated temperature
Loctite 2422 is designed for fasteners that operate in hot zones—on or near engines, exhaust systems, heaters, ovens and other thermal equipment—where standard medium-strength grades may soften and lose performance.

2) Medium strength, serviceable joints
Unlike permanent high-strength red grades, Loctite 2422 offers medium-strength retention. Fasteners stay locked under heat and vibration, yet can be removed with normal hand tools during scheduled maintenance.

3) Paste-like, controlled application
Loctite 2422 is supplied as a thicker, paste-style threadlocker (not a thin, runny liquid). That makes it easier to apply on vertical or overhead bolts and helps keep the product where it’s needed—in the threads, not on adjacent surfaces.

4) Locks and seals in a single step
By filling the clearances between male and female threads, 2422 both locks the fastener and lightly seals the thread path, reducing the need for extra mechanical locking devices and separate low-pressure thread sealants.

5) One-component, room-temperature cure
Loctite 2422 cures at room temperature without mixing or external heat. Apply, assemble and allow to cure—no measuring, no special equipment.

Typical Applications

High-temperature automotive and engine hardware

  • Bolts on exhaust manifolds, turbocharger brackets and hot shields

  • Fasteners on engine-mounted accessories exposed to radiant and convective heat

Industrial heaters, ovens and process equipment

  • Bolts and screws on ovens, dryers, heaters and kilns

  • Fasteners in burner assemblies, heat exchangers and hot flanges

General machinery exposed to heat and vibration

  • Fasteners on pumps, fans, blowers and gearboxes operating near hot zones

  • Joints where conventional washers alone are not enough under heat and vibration

Loctite 2422 is intended for metal-to-metal threaded joints and is not recommended for plastic threads or for pure oxygen / strong oxidizer service.

How to Use Loctite 2422

Step 1 – Surface preparation

  • Remove loose rust, scale, dirt and old threadlocker from the threads.

  • Wipe away heavy grease, thick oil and anti-seize.

  • Light oil films may remain, but for demanding high-temperature service, cleaner metal gives more consistent performance.

Step 2 – Apply the product

  • Squeeze a small amount of Loctite 2422 from the tube or bottle.

  • Apply a continuous, thin band around the male threads, covering the engagement length.

  • Because it is a paste, you can easily control bead size and location.

Step 3 – Assemble and tighten

  • Assemble parts promptly after application.

  • Tighten the fastener to the specified torque.

  • Avoid repeatedly loosening and retightening once the product begins to fixture.

Step 4 – Cure and bring up to temperature

  • Let the joint sit undisturbed until it reaches handling strength.

  • For maximum resistance to heat and vibration, allow up to 24 hours at room temperature before exposing the assembly to full load or maximum operating temperature.

Step 5 – Disassembly (for maintenance)

  • Loctite 2422 is medium strength, so most fasteners can be removed using standard hand tools (wrenches, sockets, hex keys).

  • For large or long-serving fasteners, additional leverage or an impact tool may help break the bond, especially after long exposure to high temperature.

Safety & Handling

Like most anaerobic threadlockers, Loctite 2422 should be handled with normal industrial precautions:

  • May cause eye and skin irritation on contact

  • Repeated or prolonged contact can cause skin sensitisation in some individuals

  • Vapors or mists may cause mild respiratory irritation in poorly ventilated areas

  • Uncured product may be harmful to aquatic life if released uncontrolled

Good practice

  • Use in a well-ventilated area.

  • Avoid contact with skin and eyes; wear safety glasses and suitable protective gloves.

  • Wash hands thoroughly after handling and before eating or drinking.

  • Do not discharge uncured material into drains or natural waterways.

  • Store in the original, tightly closed container in a cool, dry place, away from heat and direct sunlight.

FAQs

Q1: When should I choose Loctite 2422 instead of standard Loctite 242 or 243?
Use Loctite 2422 when your fasteners operate in higher temperature environments—for example near exhausts, heaters or ovens—where standard medium-strength blue grades may not hold as well. For normal temperature conditions, 242 or 243 are usually enough.

Q2: Is Loctite 2422 removable?
Yes. Loctite 2422 is a medium-strength threadlocker, so fasteners are typically removable with standard hand tools, even after exposure to high temperature. It is not as difficult to remove as high-strength red grades intended for permanent locking.

Q3: Can I use Loctite 2422 on stainless steel or coated fasteners?
Loctite 2422 can be used on many common metals, including steel and various coated fasteners. Cure speed and final strength can vary with substrate; for very passive metals, allow more time to reach full strength.

Q4: Is Loctite 2422 oil-tolerant?
Loctite 2422 performs best on reasonably clean metal. It can tolerate light oil residues, but heavy oil, grease or anti-seize should be removed to achieve consistent locking and high-temperature performance.

Q5: Is Loctite 2422 suitable for very small screws?
It can be used on smaller screws, but because it is a medium-strength, high-temperature grade, torque may be relatively high for very small or delicate fasteners. For tiny screws, a low-strength threadlocker is often safer.

Q6: Can I use Loctite 2422 on plastic threads or in plastic housings?
No. Anaerobic threadlockers such as Loctite 2422 are formulated for metal-to-metal threads and can cause stress cracking in some plastics. They also do not cure properly on non-metallic threads.

Q7: Does Loctite 2422 also act as a sealant?
Yes. By filling the gap between male and female threads, Loctite 2422 locks and lightly seals at the same time, helping to reduce leakage along the thread helix and offering improved protection against corrosion. It does not replace flange gaskets on mating faces.
